In the state of Missouri what is the law when dealing with ‘abandoned vehicles’?
Recently I got a ticket for ‘Abandoning’ my vehicle. I happened to leave work, drive about a minute on the city roads and got a flat tire. I’m young and didn’t know what to do, after standing by my car for…oh say a minute I decided to walk the short distance back to work as I didn’t have a cell phone and needed some one to come get the car and myself. I was at work for maybe five minutes, called my family, and had my boss give me a ride back to my car. At which point I found a cop writing me a ticket. He’d called a tow truck guy (because it was on a city road by law it can be towed immediately.) however the cop still gave me a ticket. Even though I was back, and obviously did not have the intent to abandon my vehicle. I’m going to contest it in court but I need to know how long a car can sit in the city of Branson before it’s truly considered “abandoned”.
According to Branson city code, a car can be towed if one doesn’t have permission from the city traffic engineer to leave it there.
You may want to call a local newspaper and expose police corruption – issuing tickets and towing cars to people who break down. Branson is a tourist mecca and what happened, unless you had a flat in a place which was clearly against the law, needs attention.
